What changed since last month
First edition — no month-on-month comparison yet. This is the first Autoza Used Car Asking-Price Report, so there is no earlier edition to compare with, and we do not reconstruct one.
From the next edition this section will show how median asking prices moved, for every group that has at least 30 cars in both months.
How we calculated this
Which cars are counted
Cars (not vans or motorbikes) that are for sale on autoza.co.uk when the figures are taken: not sold, not withdrawn, not demonstration listings, and not from a suspended or banned account. A car needs a real advertised price of at least £500; cars priced on request and adverts under £500 are left out of every figure. Adverts that are not a normal car for sale are left out as well: number plates and accessories filed as cars, cars whose own title says they are sold or reserved, and cars whose seller states in the advert that it is a non-runner or needs transporting, is for spares or repair, is a part-exchange to clear, is an insurance write-off, or has a gearbox or engine fault. This is the same set of cars as the market stats page.
What each figure is
The median is the middle asking price in the group; with an even number of cars it is the lower of the two middle prices, the same rule the market stats page uses. The range is where the middle 80% of asking prices sit: from the 10th to the 90th percentile. Medians and percentiles are used rather than averages so that a few unusually cheap or dear adverts do not move a figure, which is why no further outliers are removed. Median mileage and median year use only the cars in the group that state one.
Minimum sample and rough guides
A make, model, fuel type or body style appears only when at least 30 cars stand behind it, the same minimum as the market stats page; groups below that are left out, not rounded up. Median mileage and median year each need 30 cars that state one. This report does not print the number of cars behind each group. It states that minimum, and marks every row "rough guide" (fewer than 100 cars) or "firmer": a median over a smaller group can shift noticeably between editions simply because different cars are listed, and the CSV carries the same mark.
How groups are formed
Makes are the standard make name, so spellings such as MERCEDES-BENZ and Mercedes are combined. A model is the make and model name as dealers enter it, with differences in capital letters, spaces and hyphens ignored. Where a dealer enters a variant as the model (Golf GTI, for example), that variant forms its own group. Fuel type and body style are as recorded on each advert (hybrid includes plug-in hybrids), and cars with no fuel or body style recorded are left out of those two tables.
Asking prices, not sale prices
These are the prices sellers advertise. Autoza does not know what a car finally sold for, and a negotiated price can be lower than the one advertised.
One marketplace, not the UK market
The figures describe the cars listed on autoza.co.uk on the day they were taken. Autoza is a growing marketplace, its stock is not a sample designed to represent every car for sale in the UK, and the mix of cars changes as dealers join. This is not a UK price index and should not be quoted as one.
When the figures are taken
Once a month, normally on the 1st, from the live listings, and stored. An edition is never rewritten: each one keeps its own permanent link and CSV, so a citation of it stays accurate after the next edition appears. If stock is too thin to meet the volume rules above, nothing is stored for that month, so an edition can be missing.
