Used petrol cars are the easiest to find and generally the cheapest to buy. If your driving is mixed and you don't do massive mileage, they can be the most practical option.

Petrol in 2026? It still makes sense

A well-looked-after used petrol car can give you years of reliable service without major surprises. Maintenance is typically cheaper than diesel, and finding mechanics who know them inside out is easier.

The downside: in city driving they use more fuel than a hybrid, and older models may face higher road tax (VED). But if you live outside the city centre and do around 15,000 miles a year, a used petrol car can work out very well on price.

Warranty and your rights
