Can I tax a car without an MOT?
Not if the car needs an MOT. GOV.UK says you cannot renew vehicle tax once the MOT has expired. After a pass, the MOT record can take up to 2 days to update, so you may not be able to tax straight away. If the car is staying off the road, make a SORN instead.

What GOV.UK says
A car that is old enough to need an MOT must have one that is valid when the tax starts. GOV.UK’s steps for an expired MOT are to register the vehicle as off the road if the tax is about to run out, book an MOT test, and tax the vehicle once it has passed.
How soon after a pass can I tax it?
It can take up to 2 days for MOT information to be updated, so you might not be able to tax a car immediately after it passes its test. At a Post Office you can show evidence such as a screenshot of the MOT history or the certificate.
Cars that do not need an MOT
A car is not due an MOT until its third anniversary of registration, so a newer car can be taxed without one. Vehicles that are exempt from the MOT, such as some historic vehicles, fill in the exemption form V112 so that they can tax the vehicle or apply for tax exemption.
If the car is not going on the road
You do not need to tax a vehicle that is registered as off the road with a SORN. A SORN vehicle may be driven on a public road to go to or from a pre-booked MOT or other test, and for no other reason. It must be insured for that journey.
Northern Ireland
To tax a vehicle at a Post Office in Northern Ireland you need a paper copy of an insurance certificate or cover note, and an original MOT test certificate or evidence of a Temporary Exemption Certificate. A car there is due its first MOT at four years old.
