Can I drive a car with no MOT?

No. Once its MOT has run out you cannot drive or park a car on the road, and you can be prosecuted and fined up to £1,000. The exceptions are driving it to a pre-arranged MOT test, or to or from a place where it is being repaired. You also cannot renew the vehicle tax without a valid MOT.

The two exceptions

GOV.UK allows you to drive a car without a valid MOT to or from somewhere to be repaired, or to a pre-arranged MOT test. The test has to be booked in advance; turning up without an appointment is not covered.

Even then the car must meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times, and you can still be fined if it does not.

What happens to the tax

You cannot renew vehicle tax if the MOT has expired. If the tax is about to run out, GOV.UK says to register the vehicle as off the road (a SORN), book an MOT test, and tax the car once it has passed.

A car that has a SORN may be driven on a public road to go to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment, and for no other reason. It must be insured for that journey: driving on a road without at least third party insurance is illegal.

A valid MOT does not make a car safe

A current certificate is not a defence for a dangerous car. GOV.UK says you can be fined up to £2,500, banned from driving and given 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Northern Ireland

The nidirect position is the same in outline: it is generally an offence to use a vehicle of test age without a current certificate on a public road, except to take it to a test booked earlier or to or from a place of repair. The same warning applies about being prosecuted if the car is not roadworthy.
