How do I check a car's MOT status before buying?
You can check any car's MOT history free at gov.uk/check-mot-history using its registration. On Autoza, many listings display MOT expiry information. In Great Britain a car needs its first MOT on the third anniversary of registration, then an MOT every year after that; in Northern Ireland, where the DVA runs testing, the first test is not due until four years old.
How much is road tax (VED) on a used car?
Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) depends on when the car was registered and its CO2 emissions or fuel type. Cars registered since April 2017 pay a standard annual rate, with a different first-year rate based on emissions. You can check the exact rate for any vehicle at gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables.
