Frequently asked questions about electric cars

How much does a used electric car cost in the UK?
Used electric cars on Autoza right now are priced from £2,995 to £61,999, averaging £18,607. These are the asking prices of the ones listed today, so they move as stock is added and sold.
How do I check the battery health of a used EV?
Ask for a State of Health (SOH) report from a franchised dealer or a recognised battery health check, and compare it with the terms of the manufacturer's battery warranty. Also check real-world range during a test drive.
What incentives are there for used electric cars in the UK?
Not on road tax any more: £200/year standard rate — electric cars were exempt until 1 April 2025 and now pay the same as petrol and diesel (2026/27 rates). An electric car first registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 pays band A instead, £20 a year. An electric car first registered on or after 1 April 2025 with a list price over £50,000 also pays the £440/year Expensive Car Supplement in years 2–6; one registered before that date never does. The saving on a used EV is in running costs, above all if you can charge at home. Some councils offer cheaper parking or charging for EVs, so check with yours.
What does charging cost on the electric cars listed here?
Where you charge decides the answer, and the spread is enormous. At roughly 3.5 miles per kWh: a smart overnight EV tariff from Intelligent Octopus Go works out near £2.20 per 100 miles; the Ofgem-capped domestic rate is about £7.50 per 100 miles; and public rapid charging is £26.30 per 100 miles — more than petrol at 40 mpg. Public charge points must display their price in pence per kWh under the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023, so check before you plug in. Drivers without off-street parking cannot access the cheap overnight rates at all.
Is a used electric car worth buying?
Yes, if you can charge at home (garage or driveway) and drive less than 300 miles daily. Savings on fuel and maintenance can offset the purchase price.

Your next electric car, hassle-free

Buying a new electric can be pricey. But a used one is a different story. Here you'll find used electric cars at prices that actually make sense.

What nobody tells you about used electric cars

The million-pound question: how's the battery? That's the first thing to check. Always ask for the battery State of Health (SOH) report from a franchised dealer or a recognised battery health check, and compare it with the terms of the manufacturer's battery warranty. And don't be scared of the mileage: an EV with 100,000 miles has suffered far less mechanical wear than a diesel with the same.

Electric cars have paid road tax since April 2025: £200 a year at the standard rate if first registered from April 2017, or £20 (band A) if registered 2001–2017. So the saving is in running costs: about £2.20 per 100 miles on a smart overnight EV tariff, or about £7.50 at the Ofgem-capped home rate. Just make sure you have somewhere to charge — at home, at work, or at least a public charger nearby.

Warranty and your rights

Autoza does not sell cars or attach a warranty to them. Whether a car comes with a warranty, and for how long, is up to the seller — check the advert or ask them. When you buy from a business you also have rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015: the car must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.

You can message the seller directly on Autoza, ask whatever you want and arrange a viewing.
