7 seater or 5+2? What the advert tells you, and what to check
An advert that says seven seats does not say how big the last two are. "Five plus two" is the shorthand for a car with five main seats and two extra seats, and a car with a full third row is advertised as a seven seater too. The seat count tells you how many seats there are, not how much room is in the last row.
The body style does not tell you which arrangement a car has. The seat count in an advert is the seller's or the dealer feed's, and Autoza cannot see the seats, so this page cannot tell you: you can, in person, with the checks below.
A car is on this page when its advert states 7 or more seats and it is one of the MPVs, SUVs and estates. Autoza does not work seats out from a model's name: a model that is sold with five seats or seven is listed only where the seller has said seven, and a car whose advert gives no seat count is not on this page.
Checking the third row
- Sit in the third row yourself, with the second row set where an adult would have it. Check the legroom, the headroom and how easily you get in and out.
- Look at the boot with all seven seats up and see what luggage fits in the space that is left.
- Fold and raise the third row yourself, twice. It should move easily, lock firmly and leave its seat belts clear and working.
- Check that every seat has its own seat belt, and ask which seats have ISOFIX anchor points. Not every row has them.
- Read the MOT history for advisories about the seat belts or the rear suspension.
The free registration check shows a car's MOT history and recall status from its number plate, and the “Is this a good price?” checker compares one advert's asking price with similar cars for sale.
Child seats and your licence
GOV.UK says children must normally use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first. Its guidance also says what a seat position needs to take a child seat, such as a belt with a diagonal strap or ISOFIX anchor points, and that a child seat cannot be used in a side-facing seat. Work out before you buy which seats of the car can take the seats you own. GOV.UK: child car seats, the rules.
GOV.UK says a car licence (category B, for a test passed on or after 1 January 1997) covers vehicles up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass with up to 8 passenger seats, and that a bus with more than 8 passenger seats needs category D1 or D. Check the passenger seat count and the weight of the car you are viewing against the categories on your licence. GOV.UK: driving licence categories.
Other ways to find a family car
The body-style pages list used MPVs, used SUVs and used estate cars whatever their seat count, and used automatic cars shows only those with no clutch pedal.
To work from a budget, see every used car under £5,000, under £10,000, under £15,000, or under £20,000. The guide to what each budget buys shows the age and mileage to expect at each price.

Warranty and your rights
Autoza does not sell cars or attach a warranty to them. Whether a car comes with a warranty, and for how long, is up to the seller — check the advert or ask them. When you buy from a business you also have rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015: the car must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.
You can message the seller directly on Autoza, ask what you want and arrange a viewing.
