Is it cheaper to pay car tax yearly or monthly?

Yearly is cheapest, but the ranking after that surprises most people. Paying for twelve months in one go costs the headline rate, and paying those twelve months by Direct Debit costs exactly the same — so Direct Debit itself carries no penalty. Spreading the cost is what adds a surcharge: twelve monthly Direct Debits add 5% over a year, six-monthly Direct Debits also add 5%, and the dearest option of all is two single six-month payments, which add 10%. Monthly is not the expensive way to pay; paying twice a year without a Direct Debit is.

Worked on the standard rate of £200.00 a year, which is what most cars registered since April 2017 pay after their first year. The percentages apply to every band, so if your car pays a different rate the surcharges are the same proportions of it.

The two things worth taking away

Direct Debit is not what costs you money. A twelve-month payment by Direct Debit costs precisely the same as a twelve-month payment made any other way. If you want the convenience of never forgetting to tax the car, an annual Direct Debit gives you that for nothing. The surcharge attaches to spreading the cost, not to the method.

Monthly is not the expensive option. Two single six-month payments cost twice the surcharge of paying monthly — 10% against 5%. That trap usually closes on someone who taxes a car for six months meaning to sell it, then decides to keep it and taxes it for another six. If there is a real chance you will still have the car in a year, monthly Direct Debit is the cheaper way to not pay it all at once.

What your car actually pays

The rate itself depends on when the car was first registered and, for older cars, on its CO2 emissions or engine size — not on which band a new car would fall into today. Our car tax calculator works it out from the registration date, and vehicle tax when buying a used car covers why a car you have just bought is untaxed the moment you buy it, whatever the seller had paid up to.

Two things can push the figure well above the standard rate: the Expensive Car Supplement, which is charged for several years on cars that were expensive when new, and from 2028 the new mileage-based charge on electric and plug-in hybrid cars — the pay-per-mile charge explains how that one is collected alongside vehicle tax.

Questions people ask

How much extra does paying car tax monthly cost?
Five per cent over a year, compared with paying twelve months up front. The surcharge is the same whether you pay monthly by Direct Debit or six-monthly by Direct Debit, so if you want to spread the cost there is nothing to gain from choosing the six-monthly option over the monthly one. On the standard rate that five per cent is a few pounds a month, which is often a fair price for not finding the whole amount at once.
Does paying vehicle tax by Direct Debit cost more?
Not by itself. A single twelve-month payment by Direct Debit costs exactly the same as a single twelve-month payment made any other way. What carries a surcharge is spreading the payment across the year, not the method used to make it. This is the detail most articles get wrong, and it means someone who wants the convenience of a Direct Debit but not the five per cent can simply set one up annually.
What is the most expensive way to pay car tax?
Two single six-month payments, which come to ten per cent more across a year than paying for twelve months at once. That is twice the surcharge of paying monthly. It catches people who tax a car for six months intending to sell it, then keep it and tax it for another six. If you end up keeping the car, the six-month route has cost you double what monthly Direct Debit would have.
Can I still tax a car for six months?
Yes, and it is genuinely useful if you know you will not have the car for a full year, or if the money is not there right now. The thing to be clear about is what it costs if you do keep the car: two six-month payments are ten per cent more than one twelve-month payment. Tax it for six months for a reason, rather than as a default.
Do I get a refund on car tax if I sell the car?
Yes, automatically, once you tell DVLA that you have sold it. The tax is cancelled and any full months remaining are refunded to the person named as the keeper, and the tax does not transfer to the buyer with the car. That is why a car you have just bought is untaxed from the moment you buy it, whatever the seller had paid for.
