How do I check if a car has outstanding finance?
Run a vehicle history check that includes finance: nidirect says a comprehensive check from a vehicle checking company shows whether finance is still owing. GOV.UK’s free DVLA and MOT checks do not list finance.

What the free GOV.UK checks show
GOV.UK’s vehicle information service shows the tax rate and when it expires, SORN status, when the MOT expires, the date first registered, the last V5C issue date, year of manufacture, type approval category, weight, engine size, fuel type, emissions and export status. The MOT history shows past results, the mileage recorded at each test and when the next MOT is due. Finance is on neither list.
DVLA’s online service also gives no keeper details: GOV.UK says you must write to DVLA to request information about the current or previous registered keeper. A free registration check built on the same records, such as the one linked below, shows tax, MOT and recall details and does not show finance either.
What a vehicle history check adds
nidirect says a comprehensive check from a vehicle checking company will tell you whether the car is stolen, has been written off by an insurance company, has finance still owing, is at risk of being sold illegally or has mileage discrepancies. It adds that a good quality check should include a mileage check. nidirect does not name a provider, so look at what a report covers before you buy it.
Why it matters
With hire purchase and PCP the finance company owns the car until the final payment, and nidirect says goods under a hire purchase agreement cannot legally be sold until the agreement has been paid off. Our answer on buying a car that still has finance on it explains what protection a buyer may have, but a check before you pay avoids needing it.
Check the seller as well
nidirect advises buying from the address shown on the V5 log book. A 2010 Department for Transport written statement on GOV.UK said buyers often mistakenly believe the V5C is proof of ownership, that it is not, and that buyers need to ask for proof of ownership, for example a bill of sale.
If the check shows finance
The seller has to settle it with the lender first: nidirect says goods under a hire purchase agreement cannot legally be sold until the agreement has been paid off. Ask them to do that before you pay, and to confirm in writing that it has been cleared; our answer on selling a car that still has finance on it explains how a settlement figure is obtained.
