To buy a used car in the UK you need: the V5C registration certificate (logbook), a valid MOT certificate (for cars over 3 years old), the service history, a signed receipt or bill of sale, and valid photo ID. Make sure the vehicle has no outstanding finance and matches its V5C details. You can check the MOT history free at gov.uk/check-mot-history and run a paid history check (HPI, AA or RAC) for finance, write-off and mileage records.
