UK car tax (VED) calculator

The year a car was first registered decides which of three tax systems applies, and the gap between them can be hundreds of pounds a year.

Not the year you bought it — the year it first hit the road. Four digits.
Fuel type
For a car registered from 1 March 2001. On the V5C logbook or the DVLA vehicle enquiry service. Not needed for an electric car.
Only for a car registered before 1 March 2001, which is taxed on engine size alone: the only thing that matters is whether it is over 1549cc.
Only for a car registered from 1 April 2017: the price when it was new, including options, not what you are paying now. Above £40,000 (£50,000 for a qualifying electric car) it adds £440 a year in years 2–6.

For guidance only. Rates for the 2026/27 tax year, read from GOV.UK on 28 July 2026. Vehicle tax rates change each April, so confirm the amount for a specific vehicle with DVLA before you rely on it.
